Hi Girlies! Welcome to Girlie World, a hyper-feminine fashion, culture and lifestyle magazine. We are a home for celebrating all things pink, girly and hyper-feminine, and believe in finding the empowerment in being a girly girl.
I’m Amira Mohamed, an MA Professional Writing graduate and a hyper-feminine fashion and lifestyle content creator with a platform of over 30,000 followers on TikTok.
Growing up, I always loved pink dresses. There is a picture of me at around five years old, dressed in a blush pink velvet dress, a white fluffy cardigan adorned with pearl buttons layered over it and a pink rose clip in my unruly hair. Funnily enough, it is the exact type of outfit I still love wearing today. As a child, my dream was always to grow up and become a princess. Today I am not a princess, but sometimes I still like to pretend that I am one. I frequent art galleries and gardens across London in pink dresses, and today the pictures of me end up on Instagram rather than the family photo album. It is not as socially acceptable for a twenty-three year old woman to wear pink puffy princess dresses as it is for a five year old girl, but I do not let the puzzled stares deter me. It is what I have always loved wearing, and I may still be dressing the same at eighty.
However, make no mistake, I was not always as confident to unashamedly embrace my femininity. Growing up in the 2010s era of the ‘’girl boss,’’ I and a lot of young women my age were often warned against being too overt in our love for all things stereotypically feminine. We were told that enjoying ‘’girly’’ things like makeup, rom-coms or dressing in all pink was frivolous and immature and would make us less respected by men and society. As a result, around the age of thirteen I went through what may almost be a universal experience for many women: the ‘’I’m not like other girls’’ phase. I convinced myself that in fact I hated the colour pink, would rather spend my days reading than going clothes shopping and had absolutely no interest in wearing makeup, whilst silently spurning the other girls in my high school who did so. In the midst of this internalised misogyny, I was utterly miserable.
The turning point for me came in January 2021. We were in the midst of a second Covid-19 lockdown, and there was little else to do but sit at home binge watching Netflix and scrolling through TikTok. Season 1 of Bridgerton, a regency-period drama had just been released, and its elegant, princess-like costumes captured the imaginations of its audience, myself included. Videos tagged #princesscore and #regencycore began to explode in popularity on TikTok, and sales of princess style dresses and corsets skyrocketed as a movement of women showcasing their Bridgerton inspired hyper-feminine outfits was sparked. It was the perfect setting for me and other women alike to find escapism in childhood fantasies of dressing up in puffy pink dresses like real life princesses. This was the era in which I started to once again embrace my love of all things feminine, and also when I started creating content on TikTok. I began showcasing my princess-inspired fashion purchases and providing recommendations for hyper-feminine movies and books whilst dressing up like a character from Bridgerton alone in my bedroom. Creating content on the platform allowed me to connect with so many other women who had been on a journey of self-discovery similar to mine in regards to embracing their femininity, and it saddened me to see the extent to which so many girls and women have felt the need to reject their love of feminine things for the sake of how society would perceive them. It emboldened me to use my growing platform to encourage women to unashamedly embrace their femininity.
I created Girlie World to be a home for celebrating all things pink, girly, and hyper-feminine! From articles detailing how to treat yourself like a princess to recommendations on the best films for the female gaze, at Girlie World we do not see femininity as frivolous but rather as meaningful and integral to society. We strongly believe that hyper-feminine fashion is for everyone, regardless of size, ethnicity or gender, and we hope to create an inclusive community where people can be unafraid and unashamed to embrace their inner hyper-feminine!
Thank you for your support, and welcome to Girlie World!
