Modern Marie Antoinette Editorial Photoshoot

Creative Direction & Styling By Amira Mohamed

As a teenager, I was captivated when watching Sofia Coppola’s 2006 cult classic. Marie Antoinette, for the first time. The candy-coloured world created by Coppola as she details the life of the controversial 18th century Queen of France features to-die-for Rococo costuming and decadent sweet treats galore.  This lavish cinematic piece served as the inspiration for Girlie World’s first editorial photoshoot, as we combined a soft pastel palette with pearl jewellery and lace detailing, alongside a sumptuous table setting that puts a modern twist on the opulent world of Versailles. Delicate pink bows are sprinkled throughout as an homage to the iconic film’s impact on the viral coquette aesthetic, creating a hyper-feminine haven worthy of Marie Antoinette herself.

The Results

Let them eat cake! …and sugared almonds and delicate macarons. This sumptuous table setting was envisioned to replicate a tea party at Versailles with a modern twist, featuring plenty of bows, flowers, and sweet treats.

The first look in this editorial shoot features a pastel blue colour palette, and of course more bow and lace detailing! Our model is dressed in a powder blue, corset style dress with a Renaissance inspired print and a baby pink lace trim. A statement matching bow is pinned into softly curled hair for a modern take on Marie Antoinette’s extravagant hair styles.

It’s all in the details…. bows are tied around candelabras and champagne glasses, and even added to the cake, for an extra hyper-feminine touch.

For the final look of this editorial, we chose a sugar pink colour palette. Our model is dressed in Selkie’s Marie dress in parfait pink, hand selected from the hyper-feminine dress brand’s Marie Antoinette inspired Petit Trianon collection. Complete with a ruffled trim inspired by the Rococo style dresses of Versailles, a delicate floral print and statement bows, the dress is paired with a matching candy-coloured hair bow and a classic pearl necklace.

We hope this editorial has transported you to the opulent and elegant world of Marie Antoinette. Why not add pearl, bow and lace details to your favourite girly outfits for your own take on a modern Rococo look!
